"Pet adoption today looks a lot different than it did when I was a kid," Sen. Courtney said before the Oregon Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources. "In the Salem area, adopting a dog from the Willamette Humane Society starts at $100 and can go up to $350. Kittens, which used to be given away free in front of grocery stores, are now available for adoption for $100."
SALEM. Ore. -- A bill introduced in the Oregon Senate would allow a tax credit of up to $100 for someone who adopts a dog or cat from an animal rescue facility.

Killing healthy and adoptable animals is not the answer to pet overpopulation. If it were, we would not be dealing with even higher numbers of overpopulation than we were 10 years ago. The idea of having only dogs and cats born into this world who have loving homes waiting to care for them may seem like a dream to some, but at Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals, we like being a bunch of dreamers and we think it’s a dream worth working towards. Unfortunately, millions of healthy, adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized every year in the United States. OFOSA has a very straight forward mission; To save as many of those animals as humanly possible, provide necessary medical care and find them loving forever homes. Before you adopt an American Eskimo, consider how much time your new family member will spend alone. Remember, a puppy requires constant attention. The key to successful housebreaking is consistency; preventing "accidents" is key. Once a puppy soils the carpeting, it becomes much more difficult to train them out of that behavior. Here's a good rule of thumb to consider: a puppy can hold his bladder just one hour for every month they've been alive. For instance, a 3-month-old puppy will need to empty his bladder every three hours! Before you adopt an American Eskimo puppy, ask yourself if you are available to walk your dog several times throughout the day, and if you have the patience and commitment to wake up and take him out first thing every morning at the same time, and stick to a strict schedule. Of course, before you can walk him at all, you will need to train him to walk on a leash, which is a project in itself.Whether that means returning lost dogs to their worried owners or helping adoptable dogs find their forever homes, that is our single mission. We have a wonderful, caring and talented group of volunteers that help us every day with this mission, and welcome newcomers to join us. We work with other area shelters and rescues to find the best options for many dogs. We offer support to our adopters and the community by offering free monthly "My Dog" classes to help frustrated owners find solutions to their dogs' problem behaviors. With an adult American Eskimo, what you see is what you get. Their personality is already developed, and you'll be able to spot the characteristics you're looking for much more easily than with a puppy American Eskimo. Shelters and rescue groups are able to assess the personality of each American Eskimo for adoption, and carefully match you up with the right dog for your lifestyle. When you adopt a puppy, there is a lot more guesswork involved.
