Letting your dog’s nails become too long can be uncomfortable at best, and downright harmful at worst.
If your dog spends most of the time indoors and doesn’t go for lots of long walks, then it’s easy for your dog’s toenails to get too long and frequent nail trims are a must. If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors and goes for long walks frequently, then there will be a longer time in between your dog’s nail trims. There are several styles of nail trimmers or cutters, including a guillotine type and a scissors type. The guillotine type is the easiest to use in dogs.
Long hair on a dogs feet can hide a really painful situation with too-long nails. Keep your dogs hairy feet clipped, or check the length of her nails weekly.

My Ongoing Battle With My Dog's Too-Long Nails - Dogster
Dogs need their nails clipped and filed on a regular basis, usually every 3 to 4 weeks. It is not uncommon for dog owners to wait too long between nail clipping. Overdue nails can raise health issues. Extended growth can result in painful ingrown nails. Elongated nails affect the comfort and health of dogs. Some dogs will find it difficult to place their full body weight on their feet with discomfort from elongated nails. As a result these dogs develop sore feet, legs and hips and overall discomfort, and the simple act of just walking can be a painful experience for them.Letting the nails grow too long causes splitting and breakage, which in many cases results in much pain and discomfort for the animal. When a nail breaks, it can become infected if too much of the quick is exposed. (The quick, by the way, is the soft, fleshy part inside the nail where the nerves from the toe end. We must always be careful in trimming nails because cutting into these nerves causes the nail to bleed, not to mention causes the animal a great deal of pain!) Letting nails grow too long also encourages the quicks to grow long. In many cases, I see dogs with very long nails that can only be taken back a small amount because too much time has passed between nail trimmings and so the quick has grown to the length of the overgrown nail. The only way to get the quicks back to being more manageable and comfortable for the pet is to clip the nails often over a long period of time. With each nail trim, you are pushing the quicks back a little at a time. I’ve seen too often as well nails that grow out so long that they curl under the foot and start growing into the pad! Now just imagine if you were to walk around with a stick in your foot ALL THE TIME and could do absolutely nothing about it. That’s what it is like for dogs when this happens. They cannot tell us they are in pain. They cannot trim their own nails. So it is important for us to check the feet from time to time in between grooming to make sure there are no problems.Did you know that we offer multiple options for your dog’s nails when you visit the grooming at Suite Paws? The two main choices you have are either a regular trim, or a nail grinding. For many dogs, getting their nails done is frightening. This can be due to a traumatic quick cutting that they have experienced, and if it were up to dogs, they would never trim those nails! (If only dogs were like cats who will groom their nails themselves if they get too long and annoying!)That’s the . Now for the and . Toe nail maintenance requires a trim - just like maintaining human fingernails. If you can hear nails click on your kitchen floor, they are much too long. But don’t despair— the technique shown here will make short work of getting your dog’s nails back to their correct shape. The concept is easy— trim around, never across the quick, which is actually your dog’s finger (Figure 1). Once the insensitive nail is thinned out, and not supporting the quick, the quick will dry up and recede, allowing more shortening. Each dog’s nails are different, but commonly, very long toenails become dry and cracked, with a clear separation of the living tissue and the insensitive nail. With the technique illustrated below, amazing things are possible.
