Maia does well in these boots when she needs light protection from heat or has sore pads. These boots do not offer much in the way of traction so we use them more on flat trails and pavement. I do like the leather bottoms because I think they feel more like wearing no boots at all (which is what most dogs prefer). However, the leather is also vulnerable to ripping on gravel and boulders or being punctured by cactus spines or thorns.
If it’s not the booties that keep a dog’s toes from getting frostbite, what does? My vet friends told me that we’re just built better for playing outside in the cold compared to humans. Dogs have fur on their feet, humans don’t. The bottom of a human’s foot is very TENDER whereas a dog has thick tough almost leather like skin that covers their foot pads. Dogs have a higher body temperature – 100 to 102.5, compared to 98.6 for humans. The resting heart rate of a dog is in the range of 100 to 102 beats per minute so blood circulates faster. In addition, dogs burn calories very quickly – their metabolism is much higher than a humans.

Faux Leather & Suede Waterproof Winter Dog Boots - Pink
The Ultimate Dog Boots are made from a high quality, water resistant, 1000 denier nylon/urethane coated fabric. The bottom of the boot has denier on the inside and insulated padding. The outside foot pad is non-slip suede leather.Prior to Bob's foot surgery, I made this bootie in 2 sizes to accommodate a bandage. This has worked out so much better than wrapping an elastic bandage around his foot. It breathes, yet the leather pad on the bottom is somewhat water-proof, durable and non-skid. Also, I suspect its not as stinky to a dog's nose as the athletic wrap. As usual "Invisa-Bob" is hard to see well due to his black fur. The bootie on the front left paw is blue tartan fleece. I used a 2-sided velcro cable wrap from the hardware store which to my surprise, my Brother machine powered through to attached to the bootie. Thank you for the clear instructions for a superior foot bandage. The Leather Dog Booties are made of soft, durable tan leather. On the bottom of each boot is a double layer of black suede leather (stitched together) to help keep the dog from slipping. At the top of each boot is a Hook and Loop strap closure. After looking at the careful workmanship that went into the preceding products, the first glance at the Nylon Dog Boots made by Scott Pet Products, of Rockville, Indiana (and sold by Valley Vet Supply/Direct Pet Superstore), was a bit of a shock. This is partly because of the product’s simplistic design; the boot is nothing more than a Cordura nylon mitten with a Velcro strap. But the crude look of the product comes from a reversed seam on the upper part of the boot. Such a visible ragged edge and quadruple-sewn seam looks crude. Actually, it makes sense, from the standpoint of the dog whose foot and ankle end up inside that boot. The reversal of the seam also forms a unique pleat at the back of the boot that allows the excess material to fold rather than gather or bunch. It’s an unattractive but comfortable solution to the problem of a seam that could otherwise rub the dog’s leg.
